The Mysterious Brown Speck
The Mysterious Brown Speck
When I was looking at the tree bark, I saw something moving slowly and carrying luggage like a porter, which piqued my curiosity. However, instead of carrying, it appeared to be dragging a sac, and the sac had many objects attached to it. As I started looking closer, I could see snail shells and other small objects that I couldn't identify. Then I learned that it is referred to as a "bagworm," a member of the Psychidae family, and that its larvae are named for the bags they form around themselves. This bag worm has an interesting characteristic in that as soon as it emerges from the bag it builds a sac-like structure using silk, leaves, bark, twigs, sand, and other debris.
