Of Ancient Queens and Ancient Trees

Learning new plant or tree names was part of the fun learning experience in the field. Dr. R Ganesan was more enthusiastic to teach than all of us were interested in listening at times! While observing the tree species around, we noticed that Terminalia arjuna was seen in clusters and with relatively higher frequency when compared to other species. There were several Arjuna trees, especially in and around the temple. When we asked about this unusual occurrence, we realised that people had planted these trees. Investigating further, we came across an interesting story of Mangammal Salai - an avenue with exclusively Terminalia arjuna trees lining both sides. This had an interesting story behind it.

The story goes like this. Once, Rani Mangammal was giving betel leaves to her husband. Without realising it, she gave the leaves using her left hand, which was then considered inappropriate. Though her husband did not notice this, Rani Mangammal realised her mistake the next day and repented.  She called forth the astrologers of the court to suggest a solution for the sin. The astrologers suggested that any deed for the goodness of the people shall expiate the mistake. So, Rani Mangammal decided to build a road with trees towards the temple of Rameswaram and proceeded to carry out the same. Today, the roads which were constructed by Rani Mangammal (1689–1704) are called Rani Mangammal Salai. The highway from Cape Comorin was originally formed during the time of Mangammal.

Though we did not see the trees of the avenue built by Mangammal, we noticed a pattern of planting Arjuna trees. What else could have led to the plantation of these trees? Was it a continued trend or were there any ecological reasons or folklore behind it? The question remained in our minds. Some old archives must surely have answers hidden in them!
